(Moore Gym) -- Winning 8 of their last 9, the Trojans hosted
Union University in a TranSouth Conference match up. The game would
prove to be a battle all the way down to the finish complete with
several lead changes and overtime basketball. Union started the
first half off strong taking an 8-2 lead early on, but the Trojans
battled back to within three points and went in the locker room at
halftime down 35-38. The second half was much of the same with
neither team gaining a decisive edge. With seconds left in the game
and Trevecca down by one point, senior Darryl Keckler drained a
three-pointer to take a two point lead. Union was able to come back
and tie the game at the end of regulation with two free throws from
Bruno Martinessi to send the game into overtime.
In overtime Union jumped out to a quick lead and extended it to
as much as four. Despite a deep three-pointer from Darryl Keckler to
bring the score within one, a half court desperation shot from
Brandon Howard bounced off the front of the rim as Trevecca fell to
Union in overtime 85-83.
Senior Darryl Keckler led the scoring for the Trojans with 20
points including 4 three-pointers while senior Jared Austin added 19
points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists shooting 6 of 10 from the field
and 7 of 11 from the free throw line. Brandon Howard and Marshall
"Bootsy" Hyler added 15 points each in the losing effort.
The Trojans fall to 15-7 on the season and are now 6-2 in the
TranSouth Conference. Union improves to 12-11 overall and 2-6 in the
conference. Trevecca will travel just 30 minutes down the road for
another TranSouth contest with Cumberland University on Thursday at
8:00 p.m.
