TranSouth Tournament
(Jackson, Tenn.) -- No. 4 seed Trevecca (35-20) faced No. 3 seed
Martin Methodist (34-17) on Saturday with a berth to the TranSouth
Athletic Conference tournament championship game and the final berth
to the Region XI tournament on the line. The battle proved worthy,
but for the Trojans the season would end as the RedHawks prevailed
2-0 before a appreciative crowd at Union University's Fesmire Field
in Jackson, Tennessee.
The Redhawks scored a run in the bottom of the second inning with a
RBI single and pushed across the final run with two outs in the
bottom of the third on a Trojan throwing error.
Trevecca's Keith Black (3-3) took the loss despite giving up only
one earned run in eight innings of work. Black allowed four hits, no
walks and had two strikeouts. Martin Methodist used three hurlers in
the shutout. Clay Doggett started, Tyler Tillman relieved, and
Jeremy Poole (10-2) got the win with the final 4.1 innings of work.
Trevecca only managed two hits and the trio of Martin pitchers
combined for eight walks and seven strikeouts.
This is just the fourth time in 55 games this season that the
Trojans have failed to score. Previously Vanderbilt, Austin Peay,
and No. 16 Auburn Montgomery successfully stymied the Trojans bats.
The loss ends the best season for Trevecca's baseball program since
the 1990 team finished with 40 wins and a No. 8 national ranking in
the NAIA.
