(Jackson, Tenn.) -- No. 4 seed Trevecca (35-19) faced No. 1 seed
and TranSouth regular season champion (NAIA No. 8) Lee University
(45-18) on Friday evening. The TranSouth Athletic Conference
tournament battle took place at Union University's Fesmire Field in
Jackson, Tennessee. Trevecca eliminated Lee in dramatic fashion from
the conference tournament with a 5-4 victory.
Lee took a 2-0 lead with a home run and sac fly in the bottom of
the fourth. Trevecca answered with two runs of their own in the top
of the fifth. Luke Howell walked to lead off the inning and advanced
to second when Donnie Waller singled to left. Dusty Johnson's
fielders choice forced Howell at third. Waller advanced to second
with Johnson safe at first. Billy Johnson reached on a fielders
choice, forcing Dusty Johnson out at second. Waller advanced to
third. Billy Johnson stole second and scored along with Waller on
Colby Rainey's single. Rainey was thrown out trying to advance to
second on the play.
Trevecca took the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth.
Randall Harbert singled to center to start the inning. He advanced
to third when Justin Curtis reached on a error. Both scored on Kyle
Felts double down the left field line giving Trevecca a 4-2 lead.
Trevecca added to the lead with a run in the eight inning. Justin
Curtis singled to open the inning advanced to second on Nick Hiter's
one out single. Hiter and Curtis moved up a base on Nate Brown's
grounded out to the short stop. Curtis scored on a throwing error by
the Flames catcher. The run would prove critical.
Lee scored two runs in the bottom of the eight with the aid of
two wild pitches and a fielding error. The bottom of the ninth would
prove dramatic. Trevecca starter B.J. Jenkins started the inning
facing one batter and giving up a single. Adam Duncan entered the
first batter he faced reached on an error. Duncan struck out the
next batter he faced and was relived by Keith Black. Black entered
with runners at first and second. Black walked the first batter he
faced and loaded the bases with one out. Black turned the lights out
with back to back strikeouts to end the game and give Trevecca the
victory.
B.J. Jenkins (5-6) earned the victory with eight innings and nine
strikeouts. Trevecca's trio of hurlers combined to strikeout 12
Flames and strand 11 base runners. Keith Black earned his first save
of the season. Trevecca scored their five runs on 10 hits, while Lee
used 14 hits to score their 4 runs. Each team committed two errors.
Trevecca will face No. 3 seed Martin Methodist (33-17) in a
semifinal game at Noon on Saturday. The winner will face No. 2 seed
Cumberland University (34-16) for the championship at 3:30 p.m. Each
team has one loss in the double-elimination tournament. Lee and
Cumberland both have a berth locked up to the Region XI Tournament
next week in Cleveland, Tennessee. The winner of the Martin
Methodist/Trevecca game will earn the conferences third slot in the
Region tournament. Neither team has advanced to the Region
tournament since the Region format was established in the mid 90's.
