(Jackson, Tenn.) -- No. 4 seed Trevecca (34-19) faced No. 6 seed
Berry College (23-25-1) on Thursday afternoon and eliminated the
Vikings from the TranSouth Athletic Conference tournament at Union
University's Fesmire Field in Jackson, Tennessee with a 4-1 victory.
Trevecca swept all four games for Berry this season.
Both teams remained scoreless after four innings when play was
stopped due to rain. After a five hour and 24 rain delay play
resumed at 6:30 p.m. Trevecca took advantage of the break and scored
the games first run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
With one out in the inning Nick Hiter doubled down the left field
line. Nate Brown came on as a pinch runner and after Luke Howell
recorded the second out of the inning with a strikeout, Donnie
Waller singled to center and advanced to second on an error by the
centerfielder. Brown was able to score on the error giving Trevecca
the lead.
Trevecca sealed the victory with a three-run sixth inning. Eric
Reid walked to start the inning but the promising inning looked
bleak after Colby Rainey struck out and Randall Harbert flied out to
right field. Justin Curtis kept the inning alive as he reached on a
throwing error by the third baseman. Rainey scored on the play. Kyle
Felts singled to left field and drove in Curtis. Nick Hiter singled
to left field and Felts advanced to second. Luke Howell drove in
Felts for the Trojans final run with with a single to left field.
Berry added a run in the top of the seventh, but Todd Dunlap held
the damage to just one run. Dunlap improved to 6-3 on the year with
the complete game victory. Dunlap scattered 10 hits and struck out
two. Trevecca had eight hits and didn't commit and error.
Trevecca will face league regular season champion Lee University
on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
