TranSouth Tournament at Union
(Jackson, TN) -- No. 4 seed Trevecca (32-19) faced No. 5 seed and
host Union (34-17) on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. in the opening round of
the TranSouth Athletic Conference tournament at Fesmire Field on the
Union University campus in Jackson, Tennessee.
At 8:35pm Trevecca's Keith Black delivered the opening pitch of
the game. Four hours, 11 innings, 15 runs, 23 hits, and 79 batters
later, Trojan reliever Nathan Brown walked in the winning run as
Union won a marathon first round conference tournament game by a
score of 8-7 in 11 innings. Union's Andy Davidson held the Trojans
scoreless for the first seven innings while Trevecca's Keith Black
gave up four runs in five innings as Union took the 4-0 lead midway
through the game. The Trojans battled back in the 8th inning led by
a pair of pinch hitters, Billy Johnson and James Sparkman, who each
drove in runs in their only at bats as Trevecca tied the game 4-4.
Trevecca's Shawn Sabo and Union's Cory Engle then shut down both
offensive sides and the game remained at a 4-4 tie until both teams
exploded in the 11th inning. Led by Trojan Dusty Johnson's two RBI
single, Trevecca took a seemingly insurmountable 7-4 lead in the top
half of the 11th, but three walks and a devastating error in the
bottom half of the inning allowed the Bulldogs of Union to rally for
four runs on three hits to steal the victory 8-7.
