Moore Gym (01/03/02) - Trevecca defeated a game Indiana Wesleyan Wildcat
team that fought till the very end. Trevecca started the game with a 14-5 run
and led by 9 with 14:51 to go in the first half. Indiana Wesleyan would cut the
lead to just 4 points after a 11-6 with 10:47 to go in the first half. Trevecca
answered again with a 12-2 flurry that put the Trojans ahead 32-18 with 7:53 to
go in the half. Trevecca managed to hold the course and led by 15 (52-37) at
the break.
The Wildcats pushed hard to start the second half and outscored the cold
Trojans 14-2 to pull to within 3 points (54-51) with 13:33 remaining in the
game. The Trojan lead was just 2 points on a couple of occasions by the
Wildcats, but they could never come closer than 2. Trevecca held a 3-point
(73-70) lead with 2:59 remaining when they pulled away for good. Trevecca
outscored Indiana Wesleyan 14-2 over the remaining 3 minutes to claim their
12th win of the year and to move to 6-0 at home this season. Trevecca improved
to 12-4 on the year with the 87-72 victory.
Marshall "Bootsy" Hyler was named Tournament MVP after scoring 19
points, grabbing 6 rebounds, dishing out 3 assists and grabbing a steal in 40
minutes of play tonight. Last night in Trevecca's victory over Belhaven, Hyler
had a career high 34 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. For the Tournament Hyler
hit 22 of 36 (61%) from the field and scored 53 points. Also making the
all-tournament team for Trevecca were Wesley Poe and Darryl Keckler. Poe scored
18 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for his second double-double of the
tournament. Poe also added a team high 5 assists and a block to his totals. For
the tournament Poe scored 34 points, grabbed 26 rebounds, dished out 8 assists,
blocked 5 shots and had 2 steals. Poe hit 11 of 13 shots from the field in the
tournament. Keckler scored 22 for the Trojans tonight and added 4 rebounds, 4
assists and 2 steals. Curtis Lewis scored 24 points hitting 9 of 11 from the
field and 3 of 4 from beyond the three-point line. Lewis also added 4 assists
to his totals.
Trevecca hit 33 of 56 (58.9%) from the field, 8 of 17 (47.1%) from
three-point range, and 13 of 19 (68.4%) from the foul line. Trevecca won the
battle of the boards 33-27.
Trevecca will face Crichton College in Memphis on Thursday, January 10, 2001
at 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast over 89.1 and 91.5 Life FM. The Trojans
defeated Crichton 107-72 on November 27, 2001 at Moore Gym.
