TREVECCA SOFTBALL 2001 SEASON IN REVIEW

The Lady Trojan softball team entered the 2001 season with great excitement about using their new on-campus facility. The half-million dollar field proved to be a valuable tool as the Lady Trojans set a school record for wins with 26.

Bolstered by the play of seniors Joleen Atwood, Carrie Hill, Erica Allen, and Kristy Richardson, the Trojans enjoyed their most successful season to date. The Lady Trojans were led in batting by sophomore outfielder Courtney Alexander who posted a .350 average for the season, an average that was good enough for 11th in the conference. Joleen Atwood and Erica Allen also had big years for the Trojans, posting averages of .319 and .307 respectively. Sophomore catcher Sarah Whitehurst and fellow sophomore pitcher Wendy Allen paced the Lady Trojan attack with 4 home runs each. Wendy Allen also added 33 rbi on the season, a record that made her fifth in the conference. Courtney Alexander showed the ability to hit the ball deep as she led the Lady Trojans and was third in the conference with 16 doubles.

On the mound for the Lady Trojans, Wendy Allen was the ace all season. She earned 14 wins for the season and third place in the TranSouth Conference. Along with an ERA of 2.02, Allen added 61 strikeouts for the season. She finished the season having pitched 16 complete games and tossed 3 shutouts. Senior Carrie Hill proved to be a valuable arm out of the bullpen, leading the conference with 5 saves.

The Lady Trojans finished at 25-23 during the regular season and headed into the conference tournament sitting in fourth position. They hosted the TranSouth Conference Softball Tournament for the first time at the new stadium. The Lady Trojans lost a tough opening round game to Lee University 7-4, but they came back in the second round and defeated Martin Methodist 2-0 behind a complete game shutout tossed by Carrie Hill. The Trojans again faced Lee University in an elimination game and lost a heartbreaker 5-4.

The Lady Trojans finished the 2001 campaign with a 26-25 record and set a school record for number of wins in a season. The Lady Trojans also placed Wendy Allen, Erica Allen, and Courtney Alexander on the All TranSouth Team. With a new on campus facility, a strong recruiting class, and a new enthusiasm, Coach Angela Sullivan and the Lady Trojans have a lot to look forward to in 2002.
