LADY TROJAN BASKETBALL 2001 SEASON IN REVIEW
The lady Trojans looked to build on their first national tournament appearance as they entered the 2001 season. They struggled early in the season as they faced stiff competition from the likes of Southern Nazarene, Oklahoma Baptist, and Brescia. After a thrilling win at Lipscomb, which is now a NCAA Division I team, the Lady Trojans’ record stood at 5-4. The women continued to struggle as they headed to TranSouth conference play and entered the conference season with a record of 6-8.
The Lady Trojans began to play some of their best basketball of the season as conference play started. They swept through the conference season with a record of 11-3, which was good for third place behind Union and
Freed-Hardeman. The women also posted their second win of the season over Lipscomb 83-80, as sophomore Jennifer Wilson hit a buzzer beater at the end of overtime. The Lady Trojans defeated Berry College in the first game of the TranSouth Conference Tournament. They were defeated in the semifinals when they lost a tough game to Freed-Hardeman 82-71.
The Lady Trojans finished the regular season at 19-12 and were rewarded with a return invitation to the NAIA National Tournament in Jackson, Tennessee. They faced off against 5th seed Lewis-Clark State of Idaho. The Lady Trojans fought valiantly but came up short against the hot shooting of Lewis-Clark by a score of 84-72.
Individuals on the team made some important accomplishments. Sophomore Jennifer Wilson, who averaged 18.3 ppg on the season and finished second in the TranSouth in scoring, led the team. She again proved to be solid at the free throw line, leading the conference in shooting— 82.8% from the charity stripe. Senior center Molly Schoenberg added 14.1 ppg, earned her eighth place in the conference, and pulled down 6 rebounds a game. Junior Ashley Boykin added 10.9 ppg, good for 17th in the conference. Newcomer Charity Williams paced the Lady Trojans in rebounding with 7 a game and placed 8th in the conference.
The Lady Trojans faced tough competition during every game in the 2000-2001 season, but they made great strides as the season progressed and were rewarded with their second consecutive national tournament appearance. Jennifer Wilson earned Second Team NAIA All-American Honors as well as First Team All-TranSouth honors. Senior Molly Schoenberg earned Honorable Mention All-American honors as well as First team All-TranSouth honors. With an excellent freshman class, a strong recruiting class, and the return of leading scorer Jennifer Wilson, the Lady Trojans should have another great season in 2002.
