Nashville, TN - (11-3-00) - The
Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team started the
season on the right foot before a packed Moore Gym for Homecoming
2000. Senior Michael Blivens, who set a school record
for steals in a game (10), scored the games first 2 points by
hitting 2 free throws. Indiana University Southeast answered with 7
unanswered points to claim a 7-2 lead with 18:38 remaining on the
first half clock. The Trojans didn't flinch though and climbed back
to take a 17-10 lead with a 15-3 run. The eighth version of the
Trojans for Coach Sam Harris would never trail again. The Trojans
led by as many as 19 points in the first half of play and held a
59-46 halftime lead.
The second half saw the Trojans hold
onto a double-figure lead, and at one point they led by as many as
34 points (100-66) before claiming a 110-89 victory.
It was a total team effort as 5
Trojans scored in double figures, and three others scored eight
points each. Michael Blivens added some serious flavor, setting the
pace with 33 points, six rebounds, 10 steals, three assists,
and hit all 13 of his free throw attempts. Blivens hit 9 of 15
field-goal attempts and 2 of his 4 three-point attempts.
The 10 steals set a new Trevecca record for steals in a game.
Fitz Jones and David Bansek previously were tied for the record with
9 steals each. Jones picked off his 9 against Union University
during the 1989-90 season, while Bansek performed his slight of hand
against Cumberland University during the 1990-91 season.
Jared Austin (16), Curtis Lewis (11),
Darryl Keckler (10), and Will Partin (10) all scored in double
figures. Partin and Lewis were wearing the purple and white for the
first time. Partin is a sophomore transfer from University of
Missouri-Rolla, and Lewis is a freshman from Chicago. Jared Austin led
the team with 9 rebounds and added 3 assists. Will Partin led
the team with 6 assists and added 4 steals to the team effort.
Eric Addie and Jeremy Austin each collected 6 rebounds in the
game.
The teams had great numbers in nearly
every category. The Trojans hit 37 of 80 (46.3%) field-goal attempts,
4 of 16 (25.0%) from three-point, and 32 of 34 (94.1%) from the foul
line. Trevecca had 18 steals and outrebounded IUSE 44-26.
