Birmingham Southern rallies
to avoid Trojans' upset bid

Birmingham, AL (12/09/00)--Birmingham
Southern moved up to NCAA Division-1 basketball this season, but it
couldn't shake history against the Trojans. Trevecca has always
played tough against Birmingham Southern, and tonight was no
different than when the two teams were in the TranSouth Conference.
The Panthers started the game with a 12-0
run, and the Trojans didn't get their first basket till the
15-minute mark of the first half. Trevecca scored 8 straight and
then rallied all the way back to take a 22-21 lead with 8 minutes to
go in the first half. Trevecca and Birmingham Southern exchanged
leads for the remainder of the first half. The Trojans took a 41-40
advantage into the halftime break.
The Trojans started the second half by
building on their lead and eventually gained a 10-point, 66-56
advantage. Birmingham Southern answered with a 11-0 run to retake
the lead, but it did not last long. Darryl Keckler hit a
three-pointer to put the Trojans back in front. Trevecca held the
lead until Todd Ginn hit a three-pointer to give the Panthers the
lead for good at 75-74 with 1:33 seconds remaining. Ginn scored
eight straight to push the Panthers lead to 80-74. Eric Addie then
cut the lead to three with a three-point bomb. Trevecca was down
82-79 with 16.2 seconds remaining and couldn't convert on two
three-point attempts.
Trevecca hit 27 of 52 (51.9%) from the
field, 10 of 28 (35.7%) from three-point range, and 15 of 18 (83.3%)
from the foul line. Birmingham Southern won the rebound battle
30-22. Trevecca only turned over the ball 12 times and forced the
Panthers into 17 turnovers with 7 steals.
Michael Blivens led Trevecca with 25 points
after hitting 10 of 14 shots from the field. Blivens also tied for
the lead with 5 rebounds and had a team hit 2 steals. Will Partin
scored 10 points and led the team with 7 assists. Jared Austin
scored 11 points and hit 7 of 8 free throw attempts. Darryl Keckler
scored 11 points and hit 3 of 8 three-point attempts.
