Trevecca 81 St. Mary’s (MI) 70
Marion, Indiana (12/02/00)-Trevecca
Nazarene University came out of the gate slowly again in game two of
the Indiana Wesleyan University Classic, but for the second game in
as many the Trojans played to win. St. Mary’s took the early lead,
but the Trojans answered, and the lead exchanged hands several times
in the first half, with neither team extending a lead beyond 6
points. Trevecca finally built the lead to 6 points (35-29) with two
and a half minutes remaining in the half but couldn’t get another
shot to fall before the break. St. Mary’s scored 6 over that span
and the two teams went to the half tied at 35.
The second half remained much the
same as both teams continued to shoot well and stay within striking
distance. With 8:54 remaining in the game Trevecca established the
first 10-point lead (64-54) of the game. The Trojans then edged the
lead to 13 points (76-63) with two and a half minutes remaining to
seal the win.
Trevecca hit 30 of 68 (44.1%) from
the field, 7 of 22 (31.8%) from three-point range, and 14 of 17
(82.4%) from the foul line. St. Mary’s held the slight edge on the
rebounding totals 41 to 40. Trevecca protected the ball, turning it
over just 10 times in the game, while forcing St. Mary’s into 11
miscues.
Will Partin led the team with 22
points, grabbed 7 rebounds, and hit 5 of 8 from three-point range.
Jared Austin scored 16 points and was one of three players to lead
the team with 8 rebounds. Jeremy Austin and Eric Addie also claimed
8 rebounds each. Eric Addie had four offensive rebounds, four
assists, a steal, and two blocks. Jeremy Austin scored 15 points and
had a steal. Nick Ray hit the double-figure scoring mark again as he
hit for 10 points and claimed 4 rebounds. David Stark played some
key second half minutes and added 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 points
to the Trojans' efforts.
