Trevecca 70 Berry 65
Mt. Berry, Georgia (2/24/01)-With a
strong closing push over the final five minutes, Trevecca came from
behind to beat the Berry College Vikings 70-65. the win spoiled
Berry's Senior Day.
The Vikings went on a early 9-0 run
to take a 14-5 lead in the first four minutes of play. The
Trojans roared back to pull to within two points (16-14) as Jared
Austin hit a layup with 12:56 remaining in the first half.
Neither team would score again until Eric Addie broke the drought
hitting a basket with 9:47 remaining in the game. The basket
capped a 11-2 run for the Trojans. It was a physical battle
for the remainder of the half, with both teams heading to the locker
tied at 26.
Trevecca started the second half
with some strong defensive pressure, forcing three consecutive Berry
turnovers and hitting two layups to take the lead at 30-26.
The Trojans eventually built an eight-point lead at 45-37, with13
minutes left in the game. The Vikings started to make a run,
chipping away slowly at the lead. Berry tied the game at 52
apiece with 7:44 to go, and then pulled ahead 58-54 with 5:06
remaining. However, the Vikings saw the Trojans make a sting
of trips to the free throw line over the last five minutes, with
Trevecca scoring their last 10 points of the game from the charity stripe.
Berry pulled to within 2 points with 30 seconds remaining, but
turned the ball over once and missed two shots in their last three
possessions to seal the game for the Trojans.
Trevecca will host Lyon College
Thursday, March 1, 2001 at 7:00 in a first-round match-up of the
TranSouth Conference Tournament. The Trojans swept the season series
with Lyon (see website results page for details www.trevecca.edu).
Should Trevecca advance the Trojans would have to travel to play Lee
University in Cleveland, Tennessee at 6:00 p.m. (Central Time) on
Saturday, March 3, 2001. Lee, the TranSouth top seed, received a bye
in the first round.
Trevecca hit 18 of 48 (37.5%) from
the field, 3 of 15 (20.0%) from three-point range, and 31 of 40
(77.5%) from the foul line. Trevecca won the battle of the
boards 37-25 and forced Berry into 24 turnovers with 16
steals. Trevecca turned the ball over 18 times with Berry
picking Trevecca's pockets 10 times.
Michael Blivens, the TranSouth's
defending player of the week, scored 24 points and had 6 steals in
the game. Blivens also sealed the game hitting 14 of 15 free
throws. Eric Addie scored 16 points, had 5 rebounds, and had 4
steals. Jared Austin completed his 5th double-double of the
year with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Darryl Keckler led the
team with 5 assists and 5 rebounds.
