TREVECCA BASEBALL 2001 SEASON IN REVIEW
Trevecca entered the 2001 baseball season with great anticipation of a challenging season. Leading the way in his first season was head coach Jeff Forehand who comes to Trevecca from perennial high school power Goodpasture High School in Madison, Tennessee.
The Trojans played a very tough schedule this season as they faced off against NCAA Division 1 teams Middle Tennessee State, Vanderbilt, and Belmont. They also faced battles in every game in the always tough TranSouth Conference. While the Trojans struggled during the season, there were many highlights. The Trojans gained perhaps their biggest win of the season when they defeated # 3 Birmingham Southern 4-2 in the first game of a three-game series.
Leading the way all season for the Trojans was junior outfielder Mario Campos from Miami, Florida. Campos led the TranSouth Conference with 21 home runs, an accomplishment which also set a Trevecca single season record. Campos led the team with a .364 average, ranking him seventh in the conference. He led the conference in RBIs with 60, finished 12th in the conference with 13 stolen bases, was 13th in the conference with 42 runs scored, and he tied for 10th in the conference with 10 triples on the season. Freshman Dusty Johnson was a bright spot as a newcomer, batting .352 and earning 2nd on the team and 11th in the conference.
The Trojans finished their season at 15-40, but it was a great season. With senior leadership from Garon Osborne, Keith Orser, and Doyle Baker, the Trojans made sure they left it all on the field during every game. The Trojans were dangerous in every game with the steady bat of Campos, who earned 2001 TranSouth Player of the year honors and was recently drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 29th round of the baseball draft. The 2002 year should bring great things for the Trojan baseball team as Coach Forehand continues his mission of putting Trevecca baseball back on the map.
